We all have different hair types; curly, straight, thick, thin, you name it. Mine happens to be very fine and wants to do some sort of strange wave thing. It angers me daily. I had been cutting my hair short for a while; no particular reason, just really liked how it looked. Then, for reasons to be revealed momentarily, I decided to grow it out.

And I have been miserable ever since.

Now, let’s talk about the reasons I decided to grow my hair out. Number one, I am very insecure, with low self esteem and a bad self image, and I somehow deduced that the main reason I am still single is because I have short hair and guys like long hair. I know, I know. Stupid, illogical, irrational stupid stupidity. This is what happens when I let my “issues” make decisions for me. Number two, a friend reminded me that we are getting older, and there are a limited number of years left when long hair is going to be an option for us. I agreed with her, because there does come a time when long hair on an older woman can actually make her look older. There is something to it. But then I realized that I don’t really care. If I want to be an eighty-year-old woman with long hair, I’m going to do it, everyone else be damned. Who cares?!

This is the advice I am giving to you today and it applies to everything in life, not just hair. We trap ourselves. We create these reasons why we have to do one thing over another, why we can’t do something, and most of the time, if you take a step back, the reasons are completely insane and ridiculous. Yes, men in general do find longer hair more appealing. That doesn’t mean that they think that any woman with short hair is ugly. And that isn’t the reason why I’m still single. I am an intelligent woman, yet I trapped myself with this ludicrous thought pattern. We need desperately to change our thinking. We all know someone or have heard of someone who makes these kinds of idiotic decisions, and, being objective, say, “What a stupid bitch. Who does that?!”, but the thing is, we are ALL guilty of these exact pitfalls in thinking. We consume these restrictions on what we can do from the moment we’re born. So the advice is: fight it. Stop making yourselves miserable because of some archaic belief system that very clearly isn’t working. Just do what is right, and be happy. You can’t be happy when you limit yourselves. You just can’t.

FYI, I got my hair chopped on Monday. It looks fucking fabulous.

I’m a worrier. I worry about everything. I even fretted because I didn’t feel strong and independent when I would lay awake at night, worrying about things.

I recently read about the need for companionship. There are studies that show that people who don’t perceive themselves as lonely live longer, healthier lives. In my own experience, I rarely treated myself to a healthy, well prepared meal as a single gal. I’d eat a bag of chips. I didn’t usually mean to eat a bag of junk food for dinner, but I would get home, be hungry, decide to have a handful of chips while I thought about what to make for dinner and when I came to again, the entire bag would be consumed.

Now, my boyfriend has started cooking dinner a lot.  We are generally sticking to healthy options (I have many allergies, so I usually end up with simple, healthy meals by default).

I am still struggling with my independence. Is it okay to lean on him? It is, but I choose not to. It’s still too hard to give up or give in to actually having a mate who wants to be relied on. I was single for long enough to realize that I am a capable woman. It’s refreshing to know, but the reality of living through it is a lot different than shown on tv and movies. My home is not a gorgeous, large apartment in NYC (a la Friends or Sex and the City). My friends aren’t high powered attorneys or marketing gurus. We are regular women, working regular jobs, sometimes struggling and sometimes managing to save.

Why is there shame in admitting we get lonely? I’ve been lonely. I’m even occasionally lonely now. It’s okay to feel that way. It’s okay to worry. However, it is also helpful to know that worrying hasn’t helped any of the situations, so it’s okay to let it go.  If we’re continuing on mantras, leave work at work! The stronger our relationships, the less often we feel lonely, the better care we will take of ourselves.

This theme keeps repeating itself in my life. My boyfriend makes me dinner. In turn, I prepare meals even when I’m eating by myself. At work, I joined a team in a walking contest. I really like the people on my team and I’m determined to improve my distance every week. I set goals and I am achieving them. This helps to improve my health and my mood. My mood and physical activity is improving and inspiring other friends to stick to their goals. We are supporting each other. There is no shame in needing the companionship of other people.

And boy does Heather ever know about UFO’s. At age 20, she broke her back during a car accident which may or may not have been caused by her HUGE. UNTETHERED. FLYING. OBJECT. (aka her Huge. *ssed Boom Box) that flew through the air with the greatest of ease. Poor poor Heather. I want to give you a hug, girl.

Anyway, it’s Ms. Smartypants’s fault for writing the article, If Only I Had a Maid, that started all of this UFO talk! It’s her fault for talking about Fly Lady in the first place, AND it’s her fault that I now have to do Step One in Fly Lady’s UFO & Car Safety Mission:
