30 Days of Giveaways: Day 5 – With or Without a Man: Single Women Taking Control of Their Lives – Review & Giveaway!

Written by: Ms. Modern 5 June 2009 555 views 54 Comments

Dr. Karen Gail Lewis’s book and workbook set, With or Without a Man, couldn’t have come my way at a better time. A month ago, I got dumped out of the blue, via email, after 4 months of dating someone.

I thought, “What did I do wrong?” “Who am I without a man?” “Am I destined to be eternally single?”

Dr. Lewis cleared all of that up AND gave me the tools I needed to better understand myself, the pressures society puts on us as women to be in a relationship, and whether or not I really needed a man to live.

Dr. Lewis has been a marriage and family counselor for 38 years. She’s currently in private practice in Washington, DC. Dr. Lewis is the author of numerous books for single women, about marriage, and adult siblings. Her upcoming book is entitled, Why Don’t You Understand? A Gender Relationship Dictionary.

lews

With or Without a Man starts off with a round-table discussion between never-married and divorced middle-aged women, talking about the pressure to be married and how women sometimes wrap our self-worth up in whether we’re in a relationship or not.

Dr. Lewis tells us on page 13, that:

”a single woman, then, is often described by who she isn’t.” Unmarried.

But Dr. Lewis keys us in on the very real definition of a single woman:

“It refers to women who want to marry and want to remarry, as well as those who don’t want to be married at all but wouldn’t mind living with a man in a committed relationship. It includes women who are dating, who wish they were dating, and those, like nuns and lesbians, who have no interest in dating men at all.”

Her workbook of the same title, has 30 exercises that guide and instruct women to look deep within themselves and realize what they really want in life. Part 1 discusses the messages we absorbed during childhood about marriage. Part 2 helps us shift our thinking to the advantages and disadvantages of being single. Part 3 discusses fighting the blues. Part 4 discusses change and how changing our attitudes can change our lives.

I’m personally looking forward to reading Chapter 8: Hope for Horniness – Facing Your Sexual Feelings. Can you tell I have some newly-single frustration in this area?

The exciting part of this review? One of YOU lucky readers will receive your very own book and workbook from Dr. Lewis entitled, With or Without a Man: Single Women Taking Control of Their Lives! Trust me, this is one lucky winner! Dr. Lewis has helped open my eyes to many common thinking distortions, and she’s going to help you too!

Even if you don’t win this fabulous giveaway, you can still purchase the book in all bookstores, although the workbook is only available on her website. The price is right and the help is invaluable!

I would love to win this! I’ve always “put off” things I want to do because I feel like they would be richer if experienced with my future partner, but I’m realizing I need to live my life and not hold back and play the waiting game. This would be a great step in that direction, thanks for the giveaway!

My constructive comment is as follows: Relationships are lovely sometimes, and being alone is lovely sometimes. Enjoy what you have and good things will come to you. Don’t push what isn’t meant to be, it can hurt too much. This book seems like it will be very constructive. Come to think of it, maybe I should read it before I gift it to my friend.

beleive it or not I want this for my mom she just split from my dad and is already looking for a new relationship they were together 30 years they have been sperated less than 6 months. I think she needs to learn to love herself first and not put her whole self worth on a man thanks for the chance

  • renee said:

I would like this for my single friend who has searched long and hard for Mr. Right. I want her to know that it will be JUST FINE if she never finds him because her friends and family love HER and her daughter, with a man or without!

    Found you on Prizey.

I think a woman who thinks she cannot live without a man does not truly know or love herself as much as she should. A man doesn’t make you who you are! Sometimes they make life easier, sometimes they make life harder, but you are still YOU with or without them.
