I had the opportunity to ask Marcee, the fab brains behind Southern Alchemy, a bit about herself & her work. Here’s what she had to say:

I got started making soaps and candles about 4 years ago. After having my 2 girls, my skin became very sensitive and for years I would suffer horrible skin rashes during the winter months. After putting up with this for a few years I started doing research on the internet and learned that many of the bath and body products we buy (including the big name brands that claim to be natural and organic) contain all kinds of chemicals that are not so great for your skin (SLS, detergents etc). So I started playing around making my own products, soaps led me to creams and scrubs and candles and well you get the picture. To this day I still can not use most store bought bath products without breaking out, and any candle other than a pure soy tends to give me a headache. So my company was born and grew from my own necessity for healthier products.

After both my husband and myself became victims of the economy (downsizing and lay offs) I decided to really focus on my business and make a go of it full time. As of April of this year Southern Alchemy has been my full time job. After seeing other friends and family members go through the same thing, I was determined that I would never put my financial future in the hands of another company. My goal is to build a company that one day my daughters (should they want to) can work at and grow.

Scent, fragrances and essential oils are my favorite part of the job. Every scent evokes an emotion and every memory we have usually has a scent attached to it. I like creating scents that bring back that happy memory for people. Whether it’s a birthday party, first date or trip to the beach. The scents we surround ourselves with should bring out fond memories and happy thoughts.

We love custom orders! Every day someone will make a scent suggestion to us that we may not have thought of. We also do a lot of private labeling and bulk orders for weddings and special events.

Sounds great to me! At Ms. Modern, we knew we’d found a great shop in Southern Alchemy! I was immediately attracted to the Halloween-Themed candle labels & the unique scents that are offered. Each is SLS & Paraben Free and Vegan Friendly. Marcee will even customize the oil you’d like used. She aims to please! She also gives a description for each product, telling you what each scent can do for your body and wellbeing. For example, Peppermint helps with for mental fatigue and depression, refreshing the spirit and stimulating mental agility and improving concentration.
