Halloween Giveaway 10/7: House of Gourds – Haunted Bird House!

Ms. Modern had the opportunity to ask Katherine Sabelko of House of Gourds some questions about her art. Here’s what she had to say:

I began drawing and painting as a teenager….many years ago. I majored in art and education in both high school and college. I did not begin to sell my paintings until I was married and helped support the family with the sale of my paintings.

Sadly, the marriage did not last and I faced supporting two boys on my own. Along with a office job, I began a side business of bird breeding. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to learn how to run a business while teaching my sons the value of the dollar, the need to save some funds and why people should set goals.

With all stories of challenge and hard work, the ending is rewarding. After being married to a wonderful man for the last 25 years, we had a successful vegetable business from our farm. Gourds was one item we raised. Obviously I gave into the temptation to paint them. And there we went! The bird breeding business in the 80s’ was the inspiration to begin painting bird house gourds but the lesson of having to live lean, depending on myself to support a family, and being open to new avenues led me to the success I experience today as a artist and business owner.

Though I love to sew, sculpt and to carve wooden cowboys and comical figurines, painting is my favorite medium! Thus, whatever I see, I want to paint on it! Gourds, jars, rock, jewelry, tiles, etc. There is an endless garden of choices! Though I have returned to canvas painting, I still produce items in all areas as you can see in my ETSY Shop.

The Haunted House bird house gourd featured in my shop is just one example of custom work. One of the stores that buy my work requested a “haunted house bird house gourd“ and a “scary bird house gourd.” What fun! I love doing custom orders because it stretches my imagination and techniques.

Ms. Modern loves all of Katherine’s store items. Her wire memo bugs hold notes or business cards. They cost between $6 – $8.

Then there are her handpainted rocks! This is Harry the Turtle. He’s $8.

Now, onto what we’re giving away: Katherine will paint a haunted bird house gourd for the winner which can also be used as a table decoration!
