I had the chance to ask the owner of The Lost Earring, Kelly, about her craft. Here’s what she had to say:

How did you get started?
I’ve always been overflowing with ideas, and I tend to create in phases as I love to learn about different forms of expression and move on if/when it feels right. My dad and grandma are jewelry makers, and my great grandfather was as well, so it kind of runs in the family. Photography also runs in the family, and I’ve been doing that on and off since the age of 8. I do a little bit of drawing, painting, and crocheting on the side. Currently, I’m learning how to do photo transfers, and am excited about what kind of work will come out of that in terms of collages and more. Etsy has been a wonderful place for me to explore and share my different creative avenues. I feel really at home there.

What’s your inspiration?
I actually have a BA in Creative Writing. Writing was one of my first loves in life, and poetry is a big inspiration of mine. So many things, large and small, inspire me. Everything from a crack in the sidewalk to the infinite night sky above. I’m into roller-skating, rocks, sushi, my orange tabby cat Gracie, astrology, psychology, philosophy, the color blue, classic cars, Bukowski, Plath, eastern religion, documentaries, miniatures, baking, travel, all kinds of music (especially the golden oldies). My wonderful fiance and I live blocks from the beach, so I’m fortunate enough to take walks there often. I enjoy inspecting rocks, shells, and whatever else washes ashore. There is inspiration all around us.

What’s your favorite medium?
My favorite medium right now is film negatives. Photography is a big passion of mine, so it just feels right to incorporate that into my earring designs. I use bright and bold colors because I think it really brings out the film and makes them fun and exciting pieces to wear.

Do you do custom items?
Yes, I do. I’m currently working on some fun custom pieces for special occasions, and am really excited about how requests can help me grow in my craft. I enjoy requests that involve some tweaking on current designs, as well as requests that challenge me to boldly go where I haven’t yet.
