Cassandra, the awesome creative force behind Design by Cassandra, actually saw our original set of Halloween giveaways & wanted to share her work with all of you! She’s baaaaack for our “Gifts for Her” Holiday Giveaways with a special piece available for one of you to win! I had the chance to ask her some questions about her art. Here’s what she had to say:

“How did you get started?”
I started nearly ten years ago helping a fellow classmate raise funds for our volunteer trip to South America. She had decided to make hemp necklaces and bracelets, and enlisted my help. Since then, I’ve been hooked to all forms of jewelry and accessory designing making, and always having fun experimenting with new things.

“What’s your inspiration?”
My inspiration comes from the oddball and quirky things I find in the most unexpected places; dollar store toys, electronics, household items, television shows – even musical instrument parts! I do my best to learn new techniques as I go, because it’s what always keeps me fresh and new, and excited in my work.

“What’s your favourite medium?”
Growing up as a child, I was heavily exposed to music and theatre, and the two clashed on occasion. My heart belongs there, but certainly has opened more doors to writing, literature, acting, designing, photography and visual arts, amongst other things. Jewelry design and making is something that I do on a constant basis because it’s so easily accessible and provides ‘instant gratification’, but the performing arts would have to be my favourite medium; it’s to entertain and to educate.

“Do you do custom items?”
I love to do custom items on a consultation basis. It’s an essential part of ‘nailing’ the look for that particular client. I like to ask questions like, “What colour is your ‘power suit’?” or “Which would you rather: extreme athletic ability, to fly, or to breath underwater?” Questions like these tell me what makes you feel confident, and that’s what I want you to feel when you wear my jewelry – confident!
