“don’t look like everyone else. wear something original.”

Entries accepted: US & Canada Only!

One thing I look for when I’m perusing etsy shops is originality. There are a lot of creative people on etsy, but a lot of them sell the same things as other stores. I want something different, unique when I’m looking for something for a friend or for myself. Lara, of 237 Inc., is an original! She told me a bit about how she got started with silkscreening:

How i got started…. i was going through a bad break up and needed a way to vent my emotions. i took one of my ex’s shoes, painted the bottom and made a shirt with a huge heart and her footprint on top of it. it made me feel better and i wanted to make more desings. What’s funny is the girl who broke up with me had dated an artist before me and she had shown her how to silkscreen so my ex had told me about it but it wasn’t until we broke up that i got into it. that breakup was one of the best things that ever happened to me (and we are still friends so its all good ). i silkscreened the heart dc shirt and everyone loved it. people started telling me i should sell it so i started by sellling to friends. i kept making new desings and people kept asking for them so i decided to sell my shirts at Phasefest, the east coast’s largest queer festival. it took place at Phase 1, the lesbian bar that i lived at so i was comfortable being there even though i was terrified i would fail at my venture. well it turned out fabulously. i sold a ton of shirts and learned about etsy. within a month i had an etsy account and was selling my shirts across the country. i love making people happy and often times my shirts can do that. it makes me feel good.

My inspiration comes from what is going on in my life. there are alot of hearbreak shirts. my heart has been broken more times than i can count. its soothing to make the shirts and it somehow helps me to “get back” at the people i have been hurt by. at least i got a new design out of the relationship :) . its also nice to know that other people can relate and that maybe my shirt can help them get past their heartache. Other shirts are inspired by my friends and family or my Higher Power when i’m trying to sleep at night. Moons fall from trees came to me one night as i was trying to fall asleep. those are my favorite desings, the ones i channel from the Other Side.. i feel like they are gifts. Impending doom was one of those too. it was 4am and i couldn’t fall asleep with my boyfriend next to me. i had this image in my head so i finally got up and drew it out. it took several times before the final design came out and i knew that’s what was being sent to me. it was kindof a premiition. he dumped me a few days later.

My favorite medium is silkscreening on tshirts or canvas. i love photography too but it’s not as satisfying as painting is.

I do custom tshirts in that you can pick the color tshirt, the color paint and where you want the design to go on the shirt. i do not make custom silkscreens as that would cost way too much money. now if someone is rich and wants me to make a personalized shirt i’m totally ok with that :) i’ve designed two silkscreens that were custom; one for a band and one for the company i work for. i don’t mind doing it at all but like i said it’s not cheap.

butThe lovely Lara allowed me to review one of her tees! Being a butterfly lover, I chose to review her “Letting the Butterflies Fly Free” tee! Mine is a dark green shirt with blue screenprint. LOVE the color combo. My tee is Fruit of the Loom 100% Cotton, so it is sturdy and not see-thru like those flimsy immitation tees. You can guarantee ordering a white tee will NOT result in a “Look, I can see your bra” moment during the day. Sizes go from S – XL. I, being a doofus, ordered myself a large when I should have chosen a medium. Yes – I have a bit of body dysmorphic disorder, so when my tee arrived, I realized that a large could double as a dress on me. NOT the fault of Lara and/or 237 Inc. in ANY way! Anyhoo, my screenprint was PERFECT! No harsh smells from the paint and well-placed and professional-looking. A QUALITY product, ladies!

I’d be hard-pressed to choose a fave design from 237 Inc., so I’ll just showcase a few of my faves! All sizes are $20 with larger sizes a couple extra bucks. She also does kids sizes for $15!
