Phoebe Marie is a girl after my own heart (since it’s not taken and stuff). She makes the most creative necklaces around! Here’s how she got into her art:

How did you get started? honestly – i was roaming around a locally owned craft store, and i found a package of the printable plastic (made my a local manufacturer) and my mind was instantly going a million miles an hour. i’d been doing art my whole life, but never had any ideas for what i recently heard someone refer to as “functional art” before. anyhow, i had all these ideas, and started making the necklaces that very day. i began with the pieces that i called the “old timey illustration” necklaces. for the collage work i regularly do, i had books and books of 19th century engravings, and when isolated, printed and cut out, those images made great necklaces. but after looking around etsy some, i saw that SEVERAL people were doing that. i wanted to come up with something that was more “me”. as i continued to get into photography, the polaroid idea just came to me. i was running around town after i heard the polaroid factory had shut down, and i was buying up every pack of polaroid film i could get my greedy hands on. (i’m down to only 2 boxes left! ACK!!!) i love the unpredictability of polaroid. i love the feeling of nostalgia involved with them. it just felt like ME, doing the polaroids. and from there, the ideas just grew. cupcakes. cameras. valentine’s day candy. PANTS! anything i like, i’m willing to try making into a necklace. and i know i don’t charge enough for them – every other seller i’ve found who does anything even vaguely similar is charging at LEAST twice what i do, often up to 7 or 8 times as much!!! i don’t make a lot on them, especially considering the time i put into the packaging, but i like doing it…. wow. um, that may have been a little more than you were asking for, yeah?

What’s your inspiration? tangibly, my inspiration comes from just the things that i love. like i said above – cameras. cupcakes. antique apothecary labels. anything i think i beautiful inspires me, and if i can figure out how – i’ll make it a necklace! intangibly, my biggest inspiration is my husband, and how supportive he is of every silly thing i make or do.

What’s your favorite medium? while the necklaces are plastic, my favorite medium to create in is collage. it’s my first love, artistically, and it most likely always will be. selling art for art’s sake is difficult, though. 20 years working in art galleries has taught me that. as has just struggling to sell my own work. people see art as such a luxury. in times like these, it’s difficult to get someone to pay $20 for something you spent 10 hours creating. the necklaces are a lot easier for people to justify, i think. they’re inexpensive. they’re pretty. and they’re functional.

Do you do custom items? i LOVE custom items. people send me photos all the time asking if i can make them into a polaroid necklace. so far, i have done maybe 50 customs, and had only ONE person who didn’t like hers – and i honestly think she just didn’t understand that i do a lot of manipulating to make the pictures look as unpredictable and realistically-polaroid-esque as possible. but yes. the answer is yes. customs are great. i’m a big fan!
