My 2 Cents: My Calling, My Cause
It seems that today almost everyone “has” a charity: Easter Seals. Jerry’s Kids. Juvenile Diabetes. March of Dimes. Susan G Komen or anything to do with Breast Cancer. The American Cancer Society (ACS).
Although my cause involves cancer, it is NOT a cancer that the ACS feels is important enough to use their funds on. “Only” 700 children are newly diagnosed each year, making it below the notice of the ACS. This makes it one of the deadliest childhood cancers with a 50% relapse rate and only a 30% survival rate. Not. Cool.
Neuroblastoma (NB) is a pediatric cancer. It is usually found in young children, and is the most common cancer among infants. These solid tumors — which take the form of a lump or mass — may begin in nerve tissues in the neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, or, most commonly, in the adrenal gland. They may also spread to other areas of the body, including bone and bone marrow.
5-6 years ago, I “met” a young girl fighting NB online. Her name was Christi Thomas. She never complained about her plight and lived each day as if it could be her last. She was my inspiration to start fundraising for NB research. Sadly, she succumbed to NB after a 4-year fight on 9/19/06.
Every year for the past 4, I have done a fundraiser called a Blogathon to raise money for the cure for this nasty disease. For the past 2 years, I’ve raised money for Band of Parents, a charity created and run by parents of children with NB. It gives the money to MSKCC, a hospital in NYC that uses the most up-to-date, promising treatment yet against NB, the 38f antibody. In short, this antibody binds to immune cells (cancer cells) and kills them.
Ok, enough technical jargon. You can read up on NB more if you just google it. My point here, is that these kids need our help!
This July, I intend to participate in the blogathon once again to raise money for these amazing kids. Last year I donated $2500 in 1 day of fundraising. I hope to at least reach $3000 this year! I featured 77 kids with this disease last year and I hope to introduce many more Cancer Heroes to the world this year through my fundraiser! I’ll keep you posted on the details.
If you’d like to join in on the blogathon fun & raise money for your cause, let me know!

Good luck with your fundraiser. I work my local YMCA to raise money each year to send kids and their families to Trout Lodge for a week. All expenses are paid and there are volunteer doctors and nurses there to help out in case of an emergency. Take Care.
good luck! I raise money for big brothers big sisters. It’s great to have a cause!
I raise money for the M.S foundation my Mother had deid from that
How inspiring. I pray for the cure so that all this horrific suffering of children can stop.
love your idea – my nephew was diagnosed with Stage IV neuroblastoma at age 4 – and is now a healthy 12 year old.
Shelly – do you think his family would mind if I featured him during the Blogathon?
I am a pediatric Neonatal Nurse. Neuroblastoma (NB) or any Cancer in children is vicious to see. We all need to work together to erradicate cancer esp. Childhood cancers!!!
Thank you and I applaud your work!

Good luck! It’s always nice to have something to work for!
$2500 is a lot in one day! good for you!
i’m surprised the ACS doesn’t siphon off a tad bit of money for less dominant cancers…they don’t have a miscellaneous fund?

You are doing such a wonderful thing and I know that you’ll meet your goal in fundraising.
Thank you for helping such a great cause.
It’s terrible that this isn’t “important” enough for the ACS. It’s sad that a lot of serious diseases don’t receive enough funding or research because they don’t affect as many people, so it’s really great that you’re raising awareness about NB.
Best of luck with your fundraiser. I hope you collect lots of money for your worthy cause.
Good for you! Keep up the great work…I admire you
Wow, that is really impressive that you have raised so much money. Great work!
You are such an Amazing woman. I wish you all the best during your blogathon this summer!

Its wonderful that people like you do such good things for families and individuals that have been affected with such difficulties and medical problems. My family and I walk in the march of dimes walk for babies and I always give to breast cancer society, we have good friends that have a 13 year old with rhabdomyosarcoma and it is very hard to watch this wonderful family go through such difficult times, I wish that we didnt have to worry about diseases and cancers like these
